What classifies as a sports injury?
A sports injury is any injury to the body that has been a result of sport or exercise activity. Examples of this could be straining your elbow playing tennis, a pulled hamstring when playing football, or an impact to the shoulder playing rugby.
What are common sports injuries seen at Crawley Physiotherapy Clinic?
We have seen a wide variety of sports injuries in the clinic, and some of the most common types of injuries we see are:
- Hamstring tightness and pain from football, weight training, gymnastics, yoga.
- Ankle pain (usually on the outside of the ankle) from trips, twists and accidents while playing sport
- Shoulder and neck injuries (from multiple all sports including squash, tennis, CrossFit, Hyrox, cricket, swimming and more)
- Knee injuries from running (primarily) and other sports (usually from twisting of the knee accidentally, overstrain or falling)

What's involved in sports physiotherapy treatment at Crawley Physiotherapy Clinic?
A course of physiotherapy for your sports injury is focused on achieving one primary aim:
To be able to get back to the sport you love playing without any pain or limited movement.
The motto for Crawley Physiotherapy Clinic is ‘Play Without Pain’, and that is because that is our main goal for you. In our opinion, that is the function of a sports physio.
Although no treatment plan is the same, commonly we take a four-stage approach:
Stage 1: Gather Information
Our first step is to gather information. We will ask a specific set of questions regarding the nature of your injury, timescales, your level of play, training and intensity frequency and much more. This will help us formulate a plan of action.
Stage 2: Manual Therapy
Almost all sports injury requires hands-on manual therapy, to reduce any tightness and restriction in movement. This can involve deep tissue massage, as well as mobilisations and manipulations (gentle, targeted movements of joints and muscles to increase the joint and muscle’s ability to move freely).
Stage 3: Home Exercise Programme
Manual therapy is commonly not sufficient for maximal recovery. You will be required to undergo a safe, simple but essential set of exercises outside of physiotherapy sessions. This will help build the strength in the muscles that we need to be stronger, to help you throw, jump, kick )or whatever your sport requires) without any problem.
Stage 4: Clinical Trial
The last stage is to return to your sport safely, correctly and with guidance. We will advise you exactly how to pace yourself back into your sporting activities and teach you how to return to game-level readiness using a timetable based system.

How many appointments will I need?
As you can imagine, this varies. With sports injuries, in particular, it all depends on what the injury is. An ACL tear rehab programme will take longer than a twinged neck.
However, as a rule of thumb, we see our client’s for approximately 6 sessions on average.
